India's telecom regulator, TRAI, wants IT Act powers to act against apps like Truecaller that block legitimate commercial calls (1400/1600) as spam. This hinders businesses and government initiatives. The IT ministry reportedly agrees.
Telemarketing entities or resellers of SMS services must be brought under government’s licensing regime to hold them accountable for culprits transmitting spam messages across the delivery value chain, otherwise “this piecemeal approach” will not yield any positive results, telecom companies have argued.
For this, Airtel has built a centralised database of blacklisted URLs and every SMS is scanned in real time by an AI algorithm to caution users from accidently clicking on suspicious links.
